3 Ways to Stand-Out After Your Job Interview

Thursday, April 07, 2011. Posted in How-To Tips

Nicole Palmieri, Hiregy's Director of Client Services says there are three ways to stand-out by properly following-up after your job interview.

  1. Always get the interviewer's business card so you can write a thank you email or card.   Use the opportunity to specifically express your interest in the position, thank them for their time and briefly highlight your confidence in your ability to perform the new potential role.
  2. Send a couple of relevant references immediately following the interview (if you didn't bring them to the interview).   Make sure these references could speak specifically about your abilities, attitudes and experience in performing in a role similar to the one you are interviewing for.   Prior supervisors are best.   Never send friends or family as references unless they were a prior direct supervisor.
  3. Make a follow-up call in a couple of days showing your interest.  In Nicole's opinion, she feels a polite phone call or voicemail is better than an email and will give it a personal touch setting you apart from other candidates.   Hearing the sincerity in your voice can make a difference.

Nicole says “you’d be surprised how many candidates NEVER follow-up after an interview. These simple suggestions could make a huge difference.”

Also, if for some reason you are not chosen for the job, thank the interviewer for the opportunity and ask them to keep you in mind for other opportunities. Don't be afraid to ask the interviewer if they know of any similar opportunities in the area with another company.  They may personally refer you to a colleague or friend.

Finally, ask them if it's okay to touch base occasionally in regards to other positions.  If they agree, make sure you ask them how often is appropriate.
